How to Organise Files for a Beginner Tech Project

Create a simple folder and naming system that makes a beginner technology project easier to understand, back up and explain.

Start with the project purpose

Write one sentence explaining the exercise and keep only files that serve it. Use invented or appropriately authorised data.

Do not copy confidential workplace files into a personal practice folder.

Use a small predictable structure

Separate source work, data, images and notes only when the distinction helps. Avoid creating many empty folders to imitate a large professional project.

A structure is useful when another person can find the important file without guessing.

Name files for meaning

Use clear, consistent names and avoid final-final-new labels. Add dates or versions only where they serve a defined purpose.

Do not rename files blindly if code or links depend on their paths; understand the effect first.

Separate generated and source files

Keep editable source material distinct from outputs that can be regenerated. Record the command or process used to create an output.

This helps prevent editing the wrong file and makes troubleshooting more systematic.

Back up and test recovery

Keep an appropriate backup or version-control practice for the exercise, then confirm you can recover a small change.

Do not assume synchronisation is the same as a complete backup or use an unauthorised service.

Explain the structure

Add a short note identifying the starting file, required inputs and how to run or review the exercise.
